The Making of “Versus” – Part 1

About:

“Versus” is a cinematic story teaser that showcases the unyielding clash between Forge and Noble. Featuring V is for…‘s main protagonist, Yona Chaska; and main antagonist, Emperor Avyon, “Versus” presents a glimpse of the characters’ dance between heartache and fury.

A Visual Teaser for an Audio Series

Despite being an audio series, V is for… will explore and implement various visual medias throughout it’s production. With this in mind, “Versus” first began to embody V’s cinematic aesthetics through it’s illustrated backgrounds.

Backgrounds – 3D Layouts

Our process to create 2D backgrounds, first began in 3D. After modeling the environment, we staged our 3D environment to create layouts for the various shots that will be used for each scene.

3D Layout

The purpose of composing 3D layouts is to experiment with perspectives, plan character positions within the environment, define the composition of the scene, and guide camera movements.

Art Direction

Inspired by the common use of royalty within fairytales, “Versus” takes place in a moonlit castle. The creative choice to illustrate the castle in a painterly aesthetic is to further the theme of royalty by referencing the aesthetic of royal portrait paintings.  However, due to the grittier environments within V, it’s backgrounds present a less refined finish and a more textured painting style.

From 3D to 2D

From there, our artist created line art, laid down flat colors, shading, texturing, and completed the background illustrations with filters and other visual effects to achieve the final render.
